Xanthinuria Testing

A DNA test for xanthinuria is available commercially through the University of Minnesota at a cost of $65 (USD) per test.  All Toy Manchester breeders are encouraged to test their breeding stock for this mutation.  No testing of English Toy Terriers or Manchester Terriers outside North America has been undertaken and it is unknown if the mutation exists in those populations.

To submit samples for analysis, please follow the link below and use the submission form and instruction documents located on the right-hand side of the page.  It is important to note that the University of Minnesota does not provide pre-paid test "kits".  Cheek swabs should be taken using sterile applicators available for purchase at most pharmacies, packaged as described and submitted with the appropriate submission form.  An electronic bill will be sent within 10 days of your sample's arrival at the lab, so it is important that your email address is legible.  Payment is required before results will be released.

Note: It is extremely important that test results are carefully interpreted and acted upon.  We must avoid a situation where only clears are kept for breeding as such a narrowing of the breeding pool could increase the risk for other genetic problems. For assistance in interpreting test results, please review the University of Minnesota's reference document Xanthinuria Result Interpretation.
