DNA Tests and Result Statistics

Available Tests

Three DNA health tests are currently available for the Manchester Terrier:
  • von Willebrand's Disease
von Willebrand's Disease (vWD) is a bleeding disorder caused by an inherited deficiency of one of the 13 clotting factors of the blood. A number of companies provide this testing in North America.
  • Juvenile Cardiomyopathy in Toy Manchester
Juvenile Cardiomyopathy is a heart problem affecting young Toy Manchester Terriers.  While the problem was once fatal, a DNA test is now available from the University of Minnesota's Canine Genetics Lab.
  • Xanthinuria
Xanthinuria causes excess levels of xanthine in the urine, leading to formation of Xanthine stones.  It can cause urinary stones or kidney failure in Toy Manchester Terriers. A DNA test is now available from the University of Minnesota's Canine Genetics Lab.
Please note that the University of Minnesota currently offers a panel providing results for all three DNA tests at a reduced per test rate.
