"THREE OF THE RIGHT SORT
The Property of W. Turner, From the Original Picture by B. Aplin Howe
These very celebrated little Ratters have beaten all the Dogs that have ever  been pitted against them, of their weight, for the last three years. London, Published by W. Soffe, 454 New Oxford Street, May, 1851."

White dog with collar is Prince (under 5 lbs.); center dog is Toby (5 1/4 lbs.) and other white on the right with brass plate on collar is Teddy (7 lbs.).  Another version of the painting (perhaps the original?) can be seen below along with a third that is painted in the same style but with some variation of colour in the accompanying dogs.

Ratting at the Blue Anchor Tavern
c. 1850-1852
Detail below

'Rat-Catching at the Blue Anchor Tavern, Bunhill Row, Finsbury', c1850. Tiny the Wonder is attempting to kill two hundred barn rats in under an hour, a feat which he accomplished on two separate occasions, on 28th March 1848 and 27th March 1849. Count d'Orsay is among the audience, and the man in the centre holding a watch is the time-keeper. Tiny was owned by Jemmy Shaw, the proprietor of the Blue Anchor Inn, who described himself as the 'oldest caterer in rat-killing in the metropolis' and could store 2000 rats on his premises.

"English Terrier (black and tan) is an elegant animal, when finely bred and well-cared for.  The illustration represents a female of the true old fashion breed. These dogs are very quick and intelligent ; generally excellent ratters and may be trained to hunt anything.  they vary greatly in weight from two to twenty-five pounds, having of late years been greatly refined by crossing with the Italian Greyhound. If persisted in, this produced some very elegant specimens, but their proportions generally lack symmetry, and they become delicate and unfit for active service."  Illustration and excerpt from Breeding, Training, Management, Diseases, &c of Dogs by Francis Butler.  Published in 1860 (second edition)]

Belcher, the subject of the illustration, is a three-year-old dog, bred and up to the present time exhibited by Mr. Henry Lacy, Lacy House, Hebden Bridge. He is considered the most perfect specimen of the breed extant. First exhibited at Hull in October, 1875, he took first and special prizes, and has ever since kept at the head of his class, having been first at Birmingham, Alexandra Palace, Crystal Palace, Brighton, Darlington, Islington, Manchester, and a number of smaller shows. Belcher is remarkably well bred, being by Mr. Lacy's General out of his Saff II., both sire and dam going back to Handley's celebrated Saff by Gas out of Limie, and is therefore essentially a " Manchester" terrier. Mr. Lacy's dogs having been recently distributed, we understand Belcher is now the property of Mr. Tom B. Swinburne, Darlington.
